When I was a kid, we never talked about a "budget for food". Food was inexpensive, safe, local, and readily available. We went to the butcher. We went to the bakery. We went to the seafood market, to the farmers market, and bought canned goods and paper products at the A&P. When my mom was a "housewife", we did this shopping trip two or three times a week, constantly picking up fresh food. But, things were different then.
